The Sweet Charm of the Honeysweet Pinwheel Quilt

Ever since I stumbled upon the art of quilting, it has been a journey of joy, creativity, and a lot of learning. Materials You Will Need

Before we dive into the steps, let’s gather all the materials needed for this project. Here’s what you will need:

  • 3 Charm Packs Honeysweet: These will be used for the half-square triangles (HSTs).
  • 2 yards of Honeysweet Solid Ivory 20199-31: This fabric will also be used for the HSTs.
  • 1 yard of Honeysweet Amber Drops Raspberry 20217-12: This will be used for the borders and binding.
  • 3.25 yards of Honeysweet Poppy Blooms Ivory 20215-11: This will serve as the backing of the quilt.
  • General sewing supplies: including a sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, ruler, thread, pins, and an iron.

Getting Started: Tips and Preparations

Before you start cutting and sewing, here are a few tips to help you prepare:

  1. Seam Allowance: Use a consistent 1/4” seam allowance throughout the project.
  2. Pressing Seams: Press the pinwheel seams open to eliminate bulk. For border seams, press them towards the narrow border pieces.
  3. Cutting Fabric: Ensure all your fabric pieces are cut accurately. A rotating cutting mat can be very helpful for trimming HSTs.
  4. Organizing HSTs: Keep your HSTs organized by color and design to make the assembly process smoother.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Now that we are prepared, let’s dive into the step-by-step process of creating your Honeysweet Pinwheel Quilt.

Cutting the Fabric

  1. From the Ivory Fabric:
    • Cut 12 strips, each 5” wide, from the width of the fabric (wof).
    • Subcut these strips into 96 squares, each 5” x 5”.
  2. From the Amber Drops Raspberry Fabric:
    • Cut 6 strips, each 1-1/2” wide, for the borders.
    • Cut 6 strips, each 2-1/2” wide, for the binding.
  3. Choose a contrasting charm square:
    • Cut 4 squares, each 1-1/2” x 1-1/2”, for the corner stones in the inner border.

Piecing the Blocks

  1. Prepare the HSTs:
    • Choose 96 Honeysweet charm squares and draw a diagonal line on the back of each.
    • Pair each charm square with a 5” ivory square, right sides together.
    • Stitch a scant 1/4” on both sides of the diagonal line.
    • Cut along the diagonal line to create two HSTs from each pair.
    • Press the seams open and trim each HST to 4-1/2” square.
  2. Assemble the Center Blocks:
    • Select 96 HSTs and organize them into 6 groups of 16, each group forming a 16-patch block.
    • Sew the HSTs together in rows of 4.
    • Sew the rows together to complete each block. Each block should measure 16-1/2” x 16-1/2”.
  3. Assemble the Pinwheel Blocks:
    • Take the remaining 96 HSTs and arrange them to create 24 pinwheel blocks, each measuring 8-1/2” x 8-1/2”.

Assembling the Quilt Top

  1. Construct the Large Center Section:
    • Sew the 6 center blocks together to form a large center section, measuring approximately 32-1/2” x 48-1/2”.
  2. Add the Inner Border:
    • Measure the sides and top/bottom of the center section.
    • Cut the inner border pieces to these measurements.
    • Sew the inner border pieces to the center section.
  3. Add the Outer Border:
    • Sew the pinwheel blocks together to create the outer border strips.
    • Attach the outer border strips to the quilt.

Finishing the Quilt

  1. Quilt and Bind:
    • Quilt as desired.
    • Use the 2-1/2” Amber Drops Raspberry strips to bind the quilt.

Additional Tips

  1. Rotating Cutting Mat: Using a rotating cutting mat makes trimming HSTs much easier and more accurate.
  2. Nesting Seams: When piecing blocks together, nest seams and use fine pins to ensure accuracy.
  3. Pressing: Proper pressing is crucial. It helps the blocks lie flat and ensures accurate seams.

Conclusion: Reflecting on the Journey

Creating the Honeysweet Pinwheel Quilt is a rewarding experience that combines fun with creativity. Each step brings you closer to a beautiful finished product that you can cherish or gift to a loved one. As you admire your completed quilt, take a moment to appreciate the effort and love you put into it. Quilting is not just about sewing pieces of fabric together; it’s about creating something meaningful and lasting. Happy quilting!
